DATE RECOMMENDATION – Mare Street Market

It’s not often I stumble upon a new place in London that I hadn’t heard about already, having lived and grown up in this town for my full 31 years on this earth, which is why I was completely blown away when one day my boyfriend and I wandered into Mare Street Market.

Whether it’s your first or fifth date, this is a venue I would definitely recommend if you want to impress.

Situated between London Fields and Bethnal Green, this indoor market (and ex council block) is the perfect place to pick up food, drinks, vinyl or even a bouquet!

FOOD + DRINK

If you’re after a romantic candlelit dinner or a even just a quick coffee, there’s something for everyone in this East London foodie hub. A deli, wine bar and bottle shop down one end, serving salads, cakes and liquor as well as Flying Horse Coffee served everyday until 3pm.

For something more substantial, The Open Kitchen serves the BEST Korean Fried chicken wings I’ve ever had the delight of eating in my life (mum also swears the best lamb chops, accompanied by smoked aubergine & yoghurt, of her life too)! Sourdough pizza is also a speciality (think burrata, ‘nduja and roasted cherry tomatoes).

On a Sunday they serve roast dinners and you can catch brunch daily from 9-4pm too – perfect for the morning’s after a frisky night before?

You can eat perched around their long tables and benches or book a reservation in their dining room if you really want to impress – they serve the same menu but in a more intimate space filled with taxidermy, chandeliers, studio lighting and antique interior objects from Pure White Lines.

OTHER

Two other permeant features of this market is the Rebel Rebel Flowers store I always end up in, and the Stranger Than Paradise record store which my boyfriend always ends up in… it suits us both perfectly!

There are also multiple pop ups that rotate, ranging from vegan nail studios, a barber shop and even a distillery bottleshop.

The decor is also my kinda vibe – think neon lighting, house plants and tiles – it’s urban, it’s very ‘East London’ but it’s also not too busy which is perfect.

MY THOUGHTS

Not found a date special enough to take here? I’d even recommend it for a night out, birthday celebrations or even somewhere to catch a beer on a hot summers day in their outside seating area – it’s really a place to remember!

COST – A glass of wine, a main and sides for 2 people will set you back approx £50. It’d say it’s £££ out of £££££!

RATING – 9/10

LOCATION – 89-115 Mare Street, Hackney, East London, E8 4RT

WEBSITE – http://marestreetmarket.com

Let me know if you go here and what you think! I’ve already planned my next trip and can’t wait to try out more of their menu.
