Products to help with hayfever!

I’ve said before that I have terrible, terrible hayfever.  I suffer really badly from it and have done since I was about 11 so I popped together a selection of products that I find helps lessen the suffering so much.

Before getting on to the products, I should mention that my allergy is so terrible that I get a yearly injection to help get rid of the symptoms.  It’s not a great injection to get (it’s very expensive) but after five days symptoms are pretty much gone.  Until I get the injection, these are the products I swear by!

HAYFEVER1

iphone 830 Me after a sneezing attack – 8 sneezes in a row!

Kleenex Pocket Tissues – Tissues!  This is an obvious one but there have been multiple times that I’ve hopped on the tube and realised I don’t have any tissues, which leads to me sneezing over my hands and getting generally quite messy (gross, I know).  I like the Kleenex one as they are super soft and last a while.

Murine Irritation and Redness Relief Eyedrops – I don’t think I could have got through this hay fever season without these.  I suffer from terribly itchy, red eyes especially in the evening and these magically soothe my eyes and also take away any signs of redness or bloodshot-ness!  They cost me about £5 and I get them behind the counter at my local chemist and find them better than the itchy eyes Optrex ones I used to use.

Prevalin Allergy Relief Spray – Lots of people recommended me this and so I gave it a try.  I’m not generally a fan of nasal sprays as they seem to make me sneeze even more, however this one in particular lessened nose blockage after the initial sneeze tickle and outburst!

Optrex Activist 2-in-1 Eye Spray– This is an odd product; a spray which you use with your eyes closed!  You spritz this on to closed eyes and it apparently seeps through to help soothe eyes.  The good thing is you can use this even when wearing eye makeup and it doesn’t ruin it but I’m not sure whether it actually helps my itchy eyes that greatly!

Boots Own Brand Hayfever pills –   I used to buy only branded hayfever pills such as Zirtek, Benadryl etc but now I just buy chemists own branded ones, which are half the price, normally on offer also and have the exact same ingredients.  This saves me so much money and works just as well so they are handbag staples!

What are your favourite products for lessening the symptoms of hayfever?

I use Dymnista which is an amazing nasal spray prescribed by the Doctors, I'm like you and usually suffer horrendously all summer. But this spray is like its been sent from heaven!
Its a fairly new drug so you may have to ask your doctors if they have it, as my doctor had never heard of it!

I use a nasal spray for hayfever when my symptoms aren't too great, but otherwise I swear by normal hayfever tablets – whichever brand!

I did a little experiment and realised that taking my hayfever tablet right before I go to bed is the most effective for me – it means I wake up the following morning already 'protected' against hayfever – I think taking the tablet in the morning never worked fast enough! Hope this tip helps hayfever sufferers a bit! x

I literally cannot get by without an antihistamine and some allergy eye drops. Which is unfortunate, because I've misplaced my eye drops and am too stubborn to go out and buy some more because I'm convinced I'll find them eventually.

I know how you feel! I've got horrid hay fever. It doesn't seem to bother me outside (I think wearing sunglasses helps) but as soon as I get in my flat my eyes burn. I find HayMax helps so much. I hate using nasal sprays so it's a great alternative – waterproof mascara is also a godsend with my irritated eyes. I'm going to give the Murine Irritation and Redness Relief Eyedrops a try, as I have the Optrex Eye Wash and Itchy Eye Drops and they don't help.

Hayfever is such a pain, thanks for the post! I'm definitely going to check out those eye drops. I also agree with you on buying own brand tablets, its madness how much cheaper they are!

No over the counter products help my allergies (I suffer terribly with heat rash, made worse by grass weird I know) So I have to have prescription only medicines. Expensive but makes summer a little more bearable! Xoxo

I do love you for this blog post! Hayfever was never an issue with me but I had a trace of it last summer and this year it developed into a down-right nuisance. I'll be definitely trying some of the products you recommended.

Thanks for the post Katie, I suffer badly from hayfever (particularly bad this year) and nice to see what a fellow sufferer uses.

For anyone that wears contact lenses, make sure the eye drops you buy are contact lens safe/friendly! x

I suffer really bad from hayfever as well! I take a tablet every morning which normally clams the sneezing and sore eyes a little! I have never trying eye drops but they make sense! I have also heard that if you eat a tea spoon of local honey that helps because it has local pollen in it 🙂 summer would be perfect if I didn't have hay fever!

The current heatwave in the UK means increasingly high pollen levels. High pollen levels are a nightmare for hay fever suffers and this year I am hearing of people that don't normally suffer with hay fever having problems.

My brother has suffered with hay fever for many years, I gave him bee pollen to try yesterday and already he has noticed a difference in just 24 hours.

I also gave my Mum (who doesn't usually suffer with hay fever) this natural anti histamine, and she said the symptoms have eased in the past 24 hours, since taking the bee pollen.

I taken the bee pollen daily, not for hay fever, but I find it gives me energy. I struggle swallowing tablets, but these are small enough for me to chew.

Bee pollen is available from: https://www.foreverliving.com/retail/entry/Shop.do?store=GBR&language=en&itemCode=026&distribID=440500006921

Can I suggest that you try acupuncture.
I had similar issues for years with very bad impact on life from early teens, then a friend introduced me to a GP who had learned the technique as he had problems finding good solutions for his patients.

Basically, one or two sessions in March time. six needles (either side of base of nose, hands above thumb and first finger, feet as per hands). Not painful

I saw 95% improvement in first year. Since then (about 10 years ago), I now take no drugs, remedies or anything except perhaps one anti-histamine on the very worst of days – twice this year only.

Really enjoyed reading your blog.. I have just wrote an article (http://sarahlouiselong.wordpress.com/2014/06/30/a-guide-to-battling-hay-fever-this-summer-2/) myself on battling hay fever as I work in a pharmacy but your product recommendations were spot on!
