MAC Blacktrack Fluidline Eyeliner Gel Review & Swatches

Ever since trying Sleek’s gel eyeliner a year ago (review here), and having great results from it, I’ve been looking for another one that is preferably a little more higher end so that it doesn’t dry out so quickly.  I decided on MAC’s Fluid line gel liner in Blacktrack after reading loads of great reviews on it.  I’ve been wearing it for the past two weeks now and here is my verdict.

I’ll be upfront and honest – I’m disappointed.

The formula is quite different to Sleek’s £5 one, MAC’s is a lot creamier and softer which is good because I think it will last longer before drying out in the pot, but because of this it just doesn’t last on my eyelids.  I have never before had a problem with an eyeliner fading so fast on my lids and this has really shocked me.  I’ll put it on in the morning, and two hours later it’ll just be a slight blur of a black liner and the flick would be half disappeared for sure.

I also can’t get a nice flick with it, probably because of the consistency/formula, where as I used to achieve the most lovely flicks with Sleek’s.  Maybe I’m just using it wrong but to be honest I have the right to be fussy because it is £13.50 which I think is quite expensive for an eyeliner.  I wouldn’t repurchase this, instead I’d prefer to try another brand – I’m already eyeing up New Cid Cosmetics gel liner which I’ve tried on the back of my hand and it stayed on for a whole day.

Swatches –

The weird thing is, on my hand it looks great but on the eye it just doesn’t!

Do you like this gel eyeliner?  Which is your favourite? Recommend me some!

    really? I love blacktrack!
It's the best for longwear on me, but I like the Sleek one a lot too, though as you say, they are very different. Clinique's is a good one too though if you're looking for another

You should try the Maybelline Gel Liner, I wear it every day flicked out and it doesn't wear off or smudge. Plus the brush it comes with is pretty handy! xx

This apparently is a big disappointment to lots of people. The pixiwoo girls said this dries up really qickly, but they recommend the clinique one, maybe you should try that one? Or even topshops?

Shame, but glad you've let us know, I was going to get this but I've changed my mind now! xx

I've actually been enjoying the new Maybelline one! I picked it up thinking I'd give it a go and I LOVE it! It does fade sometimes but usually after a long day. I've only had it for 3 weeks so idk if it'll dry out quickly :S *touchwood*
    xx

That's a shame about the MAC liner! I totally recommend the new Maybelline gel liner – it's amazing! Great consistency and amazing staying power. I've recently reviewed it if you're interested xxx

I use Maybelline's Gel Eyeliner and it seriously stays put all day! 🙂

how odd, i love blacktrack – it lasts all day on me with no fading, smudging, or rubbing off! i do find that with some other fluidline colours (macroviolet is the worst offender for this) i have to apply it very heavily & really pack the colour on to get the opaque finish i like. what brush are you using with it? i use the mac 210 (precise liner brush) and i think that's quite good for packing the eyeliner on as it's so fine? x

I used to love the Sleek gel eyeliner but it kept on drying up way too quickly so I've been looking for a replacement. & personally I really adore the Bobbi Brown gel eyeliners plus they come in all sorts of cook colours. I've never tried the Mac one but I've also heard quite good things about the new Maybelline one (with exceptions about the brush) & the Clinique one. But another v . handy favourite is the Avon gel eyeliner in a pencil – it is just so practical for touch ups & much more travel friendly.

I LOVE bobbi brown gel eyeliner, it's blacker than black, doesnt budge and i've been using it for months with no change in consistency. It's £15 but i think it's worth it 🙂

I really like a couple the ELF eyeliners, both the Studio Gel and the essentials liquid eyeliners.
I'm really bad about rubbing my eyes throughout the day, despite they look like you just put them on at the end of the day.
I've tried quite a few other brands(disliked the MAC as well), but these are the ones I always go back to.

Oh, how strange I actually like it a lot. Maybe I should try the Sleek eyeliners some time.

You could also try the gel eyeliners by Maybelline. They are great to work with.

I love the ELF gel liner in black, I suggest you try it out. It's only £3.50. You can check out my review for proof that it's smudgeproof and waterproof : http://xdynax.blogspot.com/2011/03/review-elf-waterproof-eyeliner-pen-w.html

I've had the Maybelline eyeliner for a few months and it's starting to get thick & difficult to work with. The Clinique one is great and is a pretty good deal.

try the maybelline gel liner.. its great! x

  18. April 24, 2011 / 5:43 pm

I've tried so many gel liners and like you was really disappointed with Mac's offering! I swear by the Bobbi Brown gel liner tho, it's by far my favourite!

not tried the MAC one. I have however bought the NEW CID i gel liner. feeluniqu is the cheapest I have found. It seems quite pricey at just under the £20 mark, but you get THREE colours in 3 colour ways (last I checked). Anyhow, I suffer really badly from seasonal allergies, so eyes always watering. I have NEVER managed to wear an eyeliner on the water line. HOWEVER – this one is just great. I am looking forward to justifying buying another colour scheme (own grey/slate/black). WONDERFUL – HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Alison

This liner is possibly my all time favourite make up product! Such a shame it didn't work for you. My lines and wings stay on all day with no trouble.

PS just stumbled across your blog and am reading every post!
