Favourite Products for Eczema & Dry Skin

I have suffered from eczema for as long as I can remember (I even re-call being made to wear gloves in bed so I didn’t itch and ruin my legs whilst I slept).  For the most part, I have just accepted it as an annoyance that makes my skin really unattractive but I’m still always on the look out for products that ease the itching and soothe my skin.

I mostly get eczema on my shoulders, tops of my arms and legs and I find that it flares up when I’m stressed, sad or when the weather changes (I have it quite badly at the moment because the sun has come out and I have lots of work on).  It’s a constant battle as sometimes I hardly even notice myself itching and the dry patches it leaves on my skin aren’t pretty and do make me a little self conscious!

I decided to put together a little collection of creams that I find work really well for my eczema for all those out there that are also suffering!

EXCEMA2
EZCEMA

Kiehls Creme de Corps – This stuff is pricey but with regular use it is perfect for eczema.  This is the body lotion I use when I get out of the bath/shower daily – I give myself a full body moisturize using this and I feel fabulous afterwards.  This can be known to stain white clothes and bedsheets (and tints them a hint of yellow) but I haven’t experienced this.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baum – My workmate Lucy gave this to me as she knows I suffer with eczema and I adore it.  This is a super thick and creamy lotion which does leave you greasy but has ingredients known to soothe and repair the skin.  I do find that I need to let this sink in properly before I get dressed because it is super greasy at first, but it’s an absolute treat to use.

E45 Intense Recovery Lotion – I have tried countless body creams from the highstreet in my years, many from E45, non of which have ever worked.  This is one of their new lotions however which is specifically aimed at extremely dry skin.  This is perfume free and helps to lock in moisture.  It this leaves my skin feeling moisturized but not overly sticky.

Yu-Be Moisturizing Cream – Yu-Be is a hidden gem in the beauty world.  It’s a bright yellow cream (kind of vaseline consistency but without the mineral oils so it doesn’t block pores) which smells like camphor which I quite like.  Once applied to the skin the smell and colour fade and you are left perfectly moisturized.  This is a fab multiuse product, I have used it on lips, elbows, eczema patches as well as to help heal a new tattoo.  I really like this!

Kiehls Creme de Corps Soy Milk and Honey Whipped Body Butter –  This is pretty much identical to Creme de Corps above except it has a delicious smell (the other is un-fragranced) and is almost a thick version of a body butter.  As this is ‘whipped’, it has a gorgeous fluffy texture which sinks beautifully into the skin, leaving you feeling soft and smelling great.  Normally products with fragrance tend to irritate my eczema more but this hasn’t so it’s a thumbs up from me.

Coconut Oil (not pictured) – Pure coconut oil is one of the greatest multi-purpose products out there (it can even be used to cook with) but I’ve been using it a lot on my dry patches recently and it does a sublime job.  This oil is hard but melts in your hand so you are left with the most gorgeous smelling silky oil which sinks in perfectly.  I will write a full blog post on this and all of its uses very soon (once I purchase some more – I’m running low)!

Bepanthen (not pictured) – I recently started getting eczema an really terribly dry skin on my face for the first time and it freaked me out! I had to go eye makeup-less for a few days until it calmed down, but I found the only thing that helped my face was Bepanthen.  Originally a nappy rash cream, this thick cream can be used for many purposes.  All the other face creams I tried on the flare-up around my eyes stung incredibly, but this didn’t!  It’s affordable and a beauty of a product!

There we have it – my top picks to help conquer eczema!  I really hope that this post has helped at least one person suffering!  I do find that when it is particularly difficult to get rid off when I’m stressed, regardless of the creams I’m using, but they definitely help to lessen the problem.

What’s your favourite cream for dry skin?

I suffer from mild eczema around my hairline and eyebrows, which considering I also have blemish prone skin is a real pain! Finding something that deals with spots without drying my skin out even more can be such a task but E45 cream is a pretty fool proof option! Loved this post – eczema isn't something people are normally so frank about 🙂 x

I feel your pain!! I have grown up with eczema — I would get it behind my knees and by my elbows on my arms. It's terribly annoying! I've kind of grown out of it, but I still get dry patches sometimes.

Thank you SO much for posting all of your favorites!! My dry skin usually flares up when the weather changes too!

I'm definitely interested in trying out the Coconut Oil…

I rely on the e45 cream and I use Dr organic's coconut oil moisture melt too. It's in a glass bottle and had to be soaked in warm water. I feel a bit like a wizard when I do that. 🙂

I'd love to try out the creme de corps though.

Omg i feel your pain! I have eczema since i was 5, before then my skin was fine until i started primary school, i don't know if it was caused by subconcious anxiety but my skin has suffered ever since 🙁 i have tired multiple creams to help get rid of it or keep it at bay, but it will come back if i am stressed or as you said the weather 🙁 although when i go on holiday it clears up, dunno if it's a mix between sun & moisturiser combo ? 🙂 but these creams sound fab to try out myself! the cocount oil sounds really good too! And i hope to never have eczema on my face – that sucks! 🙁

Sorry for the long comment but this is an excellent post for me to read, you posted this at the right moment 😀 thanks for sharing & i hope your eczema clears up 🙂

I love this post. I have suffered badly and still am from other skin allergy. I also had some eczema in between and I know how it feels to want to scratch your skin off. I am sure this will help a lot of people. 🙂

Might have to check some of these out – even my usual steroid cream isn't helping, I've had a flare up for 6 months! x

  9. June 18, 2013 / 9:32 pm

My son has eczema, and we've tried a lot of creams. To best thing that's helped him is Cetraben. He's only 6 months but he gets it so badly on his head that he scratches day and night. I have dry skin and I find Emma hardie cleansing balm, and Elizabeth Arden 8hr cream is the best for at night, and I use Garnier moisture match in dry to very dry skin and its perfect for my face.

    Hey Katie!

Thanks for the useful info:) I was born with eczema, a pretty severe one, almost all over my body. As I got older it got milder, but it can still get very painful and irritating, oh and of course, ugly.
I don't know whether you considered seeing a dermatologist, but I know I always had to. Not that they have a cure for my eczema (which seems to be either genetic or hormonal), but some of the stuff they prescribe are pretty good. There is a little tube of cream called Advantan; this has to be prescribed in order to be able to purchase it. For a long time, the only thing that worked for me was Ftorocort, which contains steroids (I think it is either banned in the UK or is just no longer available – I live in Hungary). Then the doctor prescribed Advantan, which still contains steroids, but way less than Ftorocort. It still is the only thing that helps to effectively keep away the eczema.

By the way, The Body Shop's strawberry body butter did wonders to my skin, too, which is weird, considering it is for normal skin. I have the coconut one now and it also seems to work quite well. I know they are scented, but so far, these are the only non-medical creams that somewhat work for me.

Sorry for the long reply, but I thought I would share my experiences:D Have a nice day.

I suffer from eczema too, especially during the winter, so this is a great and relatable post! I love using coconut oil as well… it's so rich and the fact that it's all-natural makes it even more appealing to me. I really want to try the Kiehl's body butter!

I have eczema in the most common places on body and so far the best thing that helps me is Bioderma Cicabio creme for irritated and damaged skin. After aprox. 5 days of using it kind of peels of irritated skin and of course you have to scrub the damaged skin of. Maybe after 4 rounds of using Bioderma my skin looks normal until I get stressed out or eat something I'm allergic to. Bioderma's hydrabio line also helps a lot for severe dry skin.

I must say that this post really helped me since I'm looking for a new cream. Thank you!

While I don't have eczema, I do get pretty dry skin from time to time. I've found that the lotions and bath products by LUSH Cosmetics really seem to make a huge difference in the feel and appearance of my skin! My personal routine includes the Porridge bar soap, the Buffy shower scrub body butter, and the Dream Cream lotion! My skin feels super dreamy afterwards! Plus, since it is all natural, there is less chance for irritation! Definite plus! x

I've used Dream Cream from Lush when I get outbreaks and for everyday moisturising I use Aveeno (the body moisturiser and daily facial moisturiser). I find the aqueous cream that you get in the massive tub just makes any inflammation worse.

I use coconut oil for cooking but hadn't used it on my skin so thanks for the heads up!

I get eczema on my eyelids so know exactly how you feel (and arms/legs/hands from time to time). It all takes careful management. Really good suggestion about the nappy cream will definitely try that. I have some success with Simples kind to eyes eye cream, Avene eye contour cream and Mario Badescu Control Cream. If it gets really bad I have to resort to Daktacort (think its called that) but it does contain Steroid so not advisable unless you have to. Also sometimes wash face with Nizoral shampoo and that can help too. Good luck x

I have been known to be called the 'lizard lady' because my skin is so dry! BUT I have used the E45 new cream too and it's amazing. I've tried a few and I always find they are too expensive…sigh… BUT I will be adding the Kiehl's Creme de Corp to my list. Anything to get away the scales!

I don't have eczema, but one of my sisters does. She's been using Lotil cream on hers and swears it's been helpful. I can't speak to how accurate that is, but it does wonders for dry skin. My mom's been using it lately on the aftermath of 2nd and 3rd degree burns she got from a pot handle breaking as she was draining boiling pasta.

I bought it a few years ago when my hands were so dry that my fingers would split open between the ridges of my fingerprints and I use it every night on my hands. It sinks in so quickly and no more cracking. Now I've got half the family hooked.

I am glad I came across this article. I do not have eczema but I have extremely dry skin. It is pretty bad all year around but it defiantly is the worst during the winter. I have tried many products but most of these you mentioned in this article I have not. I like how you mentioned coconut oil, because that does help hydrate my skin during the summer but that is it. I recently found a protective ointment called Aloe vesta which is already starting to work. I am a very pale person and my skin is very sensitive. This ointment protects my skin from breakdown, repelling ,moisture and conditioning. It also helps replenish the skin around my nose that gets red during the winter.

Hi, I got eczema when I was 2 months old and have had it all over my body (yes everywhere) ever since. It was so bad at that time that my paediatrician told my parents about a tablet that was being tested in America to stop eczema but it one baby had died due to taking it so obviously I never took it (thank god!)

Anyway, my eczema has gotten a lot better since I turned about 14. Some things that REALLY help are: the sea… the salt is amazing for cuts, scratches and dry skin, it will sting at first but it helps a lot, the sunshine helps a lot too!

2 products I would definitely recommend and my mum was told to use on me by my paediatrician are:
    1. As mentioned somewhere above, the Oilatum oil that you put in the bath, it's AMAZING!
    2. Betnovate, which is a kind of cortisone cream (in England you need a prescription to get it I think, but in other European countries you don't).

Also, please try Lancôme's Nutrix Cream if your face is extremely dehydrated or if your eczema is very bad on your face (sorry but this has actually been discontinued but you can still buy it in many department stores etc. so buy it while you can!) . A lighter option for people still with dry skin or with eczema but who don't have it chronically is Lancôme's Nutrix Royale, which is also relatively thick and very hydrating!

Sorry for rambling on but I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found these products, good luck to everyone! x

Cetraben is amazing. I've had eczema most my life (comes and goes), have really dry and sensitive skin and have tried so many different potions and lotions (aveeno, eucerin, oilatum, aloe vera etc etc) and cetraben has been the best, along with cutting out certain foods. I've also been using a cream called salcura zeoderm on my face when it's bad and I find that really helps.

Sorry to hear about your hardships with that disease, eczema. I feel you, every time I get into cold weather and stressful conditions before, it's really gets annoying. A friend of mine recommended a natural eczema product treatment , which works best for me. It's been months ago since I used that product but no signs of eczema at all. I have been into a lot of stressful situation a couple of months ago and it's not even showing up anymore. So I can say I am totally free from eczema. Try this one and it can help you have a good life as it changed mine. Here's the link , eczemafreetips.com and just follow the instructions. It was not exaggerated because after seriously following all in the instructions, in just two weeks the eczema's gone. No more redness and itchiness. I hope this can help you in anyway possible. Please , keep on posting. I am looking forward to hear about your experience about this treatment.I highly recommend it to you. Thanks and Good luck!

I suffer from really try skin. Eczema is a big problem for me: the dry patches, cracked skin etc. I now realize that moisture need to be my friend. Moisturizing effectively is key.

MY BIGGEST TIP EVER: Moisturize on damp skin. This is best because you can seal in some of the moisture from the water. Moisturize your skin at least twice a day. So morning and evening if that works well for you.

***You can make your own moisturizer if you like (I love my DIY mixtures -cheap and effective).
My current mixture: Coconut oil, Aloe Vera gel, Shea butter, Water (in this order or proportion). My Skin loves it.

Check out my blog post where I list 6 tips to relieving dry skin.

Thanks so much for this post, I really appreciate hearing how other people cope with eczema. In the winter it's seriously hard to keep looking presentable at work with dry and flared up skin (particularly the dreaded red nose!)

My eczema moisturisers are now a lot cheaper than anything I used to buy. I was hooked on Clinique, Aveda and any other high end creams I could get my hands on. I still get the Body Shop Mango Body Butter for fun times when I want something scented but generally I rely on medicine-based ones now. I get them all on prescription so now my spending is down to less than £150 per year:

    1) Dermol 200 shower gel – the most incredible product I've ever used. It seals in moisture into my skin leaving it soft and has transformed my life. More importantly it stops me from getting skin infections and keeps my scalp healthy too. I apply it in the shower instead of shower gel.

The National Eczema Association advises that you moisturise within 3 minutes of getting out of the shower..it works for me.

    2) Aveeno Cream – works wonders. It sinks into my skin and people compliment my skin tone all the time. Great cream all year round.

    3) Doublebase Gel – to seal in the moisture after Aveeno. Particularly useful in winter. It stings a bit on my face but the rest of my body laps it up.

    4) Steroid creams – Elocon for flare ups, Fucibet for infections – you'll need a prescription

    5) Protopic (non steroidal treatment) – to use on eyelids and keep skin under control. Doctors generally only prescribe this if it's recommended by a dermatologist because it's expensive for the NHS.

Also I'd highly recommend Blephasol for any eyelid-related drama. Good luck ladies!

    Hi,

My poor little niece who is 4 years old has eczema pretty bad. I have a solution to eczema (and psoriasis), as well as some other skin care issues. If you have never heard of Arbonne, Swiss botanically-based beauty products, I would highly recommend it. Many of their face care lines help people with acne, rosacea, broken capillaries and facial dryness, oiliness and redness. Their SeaSource Detox body gelee (best for eczema), and the 5-in-1 massage oil (for eczema and psoriasis), have both been very successful in elimiating eczema overnight. This is one reason I became a consultant for Arbonne. Quick results – and from vegan-certified, gluten-free and GMO-free products!

Arbonne's products are also free of: parabens, mineral oils, petrolatum, phthlalates, sulfates, animal by-products/fillers, chemical fragrances/dyes, etc. They are NOT tested on animals. Yay! They are also hypoallergenic.

I recently gave my neighbor a sample of the body gelee to use on her grandbaby's eczema on her legs, and she said it's clearing up quick. Within a day. Also, Arbonne's baby line is amazing for adults too in clearing up skin problems. The diaper rash cream has a ton of different uses from rashes, bug bites, chapped skin and many more.

You need a consultant to get these products at the discounted price. I am a consultant with Arbonne. I don't rave about these products just to sell them, I sell them because they are the best products I've ever used in my lifetime and I’m so psyched to tell others about them. I hate seeing people with skin care issues, and spinning their wheels (and spending all of their money!) trying to figure out the best product for them.

Arbonne has the following products: baby skin & hair care, anti-aging skin care, aromatherapy/spa, hair care, health & wellness, fitness/nutrition.

If you are interested in hearing more about these products, please contact me. I am not opposed to sending out samples for free, should you really be interested in trying some of their safe and wonderful products.

in regard to Kiehl's recommendation you idiots should know it is based on parabens which cause cancer

Thanks for the idea.. While the exact cause of eczema is still unknown, one must be aware of right kind of skin care products that not act as trigger.

Thank you for the information you share here. Excema sometimes is a reaction to external things such as detergents, dyes etc. It is important to thoroughly clean the skin. That is part of the reason skin gets irritated and itchy and wants to get rid of irritants. I love one technique that removes all of the residue and rolls it off. I discovered it lately. It is Baiden Mitten. If you search google ancient exfoliation you will find out about it.

Hi, Love your Blog. Have you ever tried Nourish lotion? (nourishlotion.com) I think they are kinda new to the market. I have had Ichthyosis since I was a baby and other than living in the warm, humid south, I haven't found anything to help my skin. I have searched and tried every product on the market. I think this is the best so far. It's not greasy or thick like most and my recurring areas, hands and legs seemed to have improved. I really love the stuff.
