Here today with a very quick March favourites!

March 2013 favs!

Revlon Nearly Naked Foundation – I’ve been reaching for this foundation quite a bit over March and I really like it.  I do have terrible skin at the moment but this provides a natural, medium coverage which is buildable.  I still wear concealer & powder over the top, but I like the finish of this foundation and the colour isn’t too dark for me either!  I have a full review of this coming soon, with before and after pictures!

Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara – This mascara does a faaabulous job of making my eyelashes look super sexy and defined.  Although it is expensive for a mascara, I would definitely repurchase as I really like the way it lengthens my lashes without making them clumpy!

Smashbox Long Wear Mega Tint by Mimosa – I’ve been fully embracing the peach lip look throughout March and this baby has helped me to do that!  This is a long lasting lip shade; it has a slightly odd formula, it applies like a liquid on the lips but dries to a lipstick.  It’s love!

Wonder Oil – I adore multi-purpose products and this is fast becoming one of my favourites.  I’ve used this citrusy smelling oil  as a bath oil, hair oil and body oil and I really adore it.  I have a full post coming up on this soon so stay tuned!

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser – A bit of a long story here; I went to my GP early March about my acne as it’s been really getting me down, making me self conscious and it’s generally been really bad!  He prescribed me a cream called Epiduo (if it turns out to work I’ll let y’all know) and gave me a leaflet on how to use it.  Acne creams dry your skin out, full stop, and the leaflet recommended using Cetpahil products to wash and moisturize with, so I went out and brought them!  I really like this cleanser; it doesn’t remove makeup (you need another wash to do that) but it does leave my skin clean and not tight at all.   I’ll write this up a full review of this soon too!

The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera – I fell in love with this book as soon as I started reading it and it has made it’s way into my Top 5 Fav books.  This is a story set in Prague, in 1970s-80s and is heavily focused on the lives of four main characters in the Communist period.  It mainly follows the story of Tomas and Teresa, and their relationship (Tomas is a doctor and also cheats; has many mistresses).  I find it really difficult to describe this book (or sell it to you in any sort) but it’s very philosophical and also contains a loottta sex.
I’ll leave you with a quote from the book
“When we want to give expression to a dramatic situation in our lives, we tend to use metaphors of heaviness. We say that something has become a great burden to us. We either bear the burden or fail and go down with it, we struggle with it, win or lose. And Sabina – what had come over her? Nothing. She had left a man because she felt like leaving him. Had he persecuted her? Had he tried to take revenge on her? No. Her drama was a drama not of heaviness but of lightness. What fell to her lot was not the burden, but the unbearable lightness of being.”

What products have you been loving throughout March?  Read any good books recently?

Really? Crazy. How's that for a coincidence?

I really like the nearly naked foundation too, I was surprised how well it covered but you definitely need a concealer if your not a lucky bunny and blessed with flawless skin. I've just done a review on it actually, it has replaced my Rimmel wake me up foundation for an every day more natural skin finish.

The book sounds really good! Might check that out next time I need a new read. I also love Revlon foundation but they have put their prices up so much in the UK haven't they? I went into a Boots to get a new bottle and over £12 for it when I think it was £8 before hand…. will still get though as I think is worth it.

    Hey Katie,

I've been struggling with my skin for around a year now, The Doc's put me on two course of antibiotics, currently on week two of Tetralysal… (If you're interested I'll let you know how it goes!)

Currently I'm using the Ren sensitive gel cleanser… but I've been using it for a few months now and there seems to be no improvement (having switched from liz Earle cleanse and polish which I think was having an adverse effect) I particularly suffer with little pimples all over my forehead and cheeks… Do you think Cetaphil could be worth a go?

I understand you're not a skincare expert, but I'm a long time follower and know you've had some trouble with you skin so just looking for any info I can get.

    Thank you,

    Hey katie,

I'm in a similar situation in that I absolutely hate prescribed creams because they dry out my skin sooo much – I've tried a stupid amount of topical treatments over 10 years! But I've been on epiduo for 4 months now and it honestly has helped, using it every other night seems to prevent my skin from drying out 🙂

Hey, thanks for always sharing your skin stories – you don't know it, but you inspire me to get through a lot and to stop whining and whap on the slap and get on with it, because you always manage to turn out so lovely.

Three things I wanted to share that helped me – first, I know Accutane gets a terrible rap on the internet, but I took it about 7 years ago and it was a godsend with no horrible side effects. It cleared all the cysts on my back and arms and chests for good and it cleared my face in the short term, although my face acne did eventually come back (though not as badly). I'm thinking about taking maintenance doses – like, short term small doses to keep things under control but not a full course of Accutane – if I can get the NHS to agree… maintenance doses seem to be a continental innovation and not so much here.

The other two things are: I bit the bullet this year and tried balm and oil cleansing. Weird because I'm always so oily and spotty! But I got given a Lush Ultrabland sample and it really made a difference – it's the smear on the balm and remove it with hot flannels kind of thing – and my skin has gone from being oily as Texas to comfortably dry and asking for once-a-day moisturizer. It's kind of trippy but I think the balm cleansing has cut my remaining acne in half – which unfortunately still leaves considerable acne… so the other thing I do now is use a retinol serum (I use the Peter Thomas Roth one) at night, and that seems to cut back on it a bit more – at least, I've noticed I don't seem to get cystic ones anymore. I think those two products have really made a difference. I still have crap skin, but it seems to be less… virulently, deep-skin sort of crap and more surface crap, if you know what I mean.

Hang in there and keep the makeup tips and tricks coming – I LOVE them and totally use all of them. And if you know anything for open spots… overnight or otherwise… omigod, SHARE!

Hi Katie. I feel your pain. I have combination skin and use a retinol product called Alpha Hydrox – Retinol Night ResQ. It helps tremendously with my acne, to the point of not getting large spots or cysts anymore. However, since moving to the UK my skin has gotten drier. I ordered Effaclar H by La Roche Posay, which "Moisturises oily skin weakened by drying skin care products". I've also bought the cleanser. Sounds like this might be suited for your needs too. I have yet to try it(it's in the post), but it sounds perfect. I'll give you an update once I get it.

In the meantime, I bought 2 products over the weekend that I couldn't resist, "Good Things Deep Clean Blackhead Exfoliator" and "Good Things Face the Day Moisturiser" (2 for £6 at Boots). I don't have blackheads, but needed a natural scrub for my flaky skin. So far I am very pleased with it. My skin is no longer tight and as flaky. It also helps balance my skin tone. I use it morning and night and it smells delicious. If you are in the market for a gentle scrub that helps with dryness, give it a go! The moisturiser is really lovely too and has SPF. The fact that it's free from Sodium Laurel Sulfates, Parabens, and Mineral Oils, makes me appreciate the products even more.

ANyway, sorry for the long comment, just wanted to share! 🙂 xx

Ever since giving up wheat and gluten my skin has been 100% better. Thought I'd let you know xx

  27. April 4, 2013 / 12:52 pm

My favourite cleanser is a mix of cold-pressed, organic sweet almond oil mixed in a 3:2 ratio with castor oil, with a few drops of tea tree essential oil to help combat bacteria. I make up the solution, decant it into the smallest travel bottle I can find (again, to help prevent build up of any unpleasant stuff!) and it's the most incredibly effective cleansing solution. It gets off everything, including really heavy eye make up, without any trouble! The trick is to rinse a clean washcloth (fresh every day) in hot water, and gently swirl all the oil off your face. Bear in mind, I have combination skin, and don't get spots per se, but blackheads, and they have improved so so much by keeping up this cleansing routing every night! In the mornings, I just swish cool clean water on my face. To moisturise, usually just in the evenings after cleansing, I keep another bottle of just the sweet almond oil and rub a few drops into dry patches. And voila, very happy skin with a bare minimum of irritating chemicals going onto my face! The natural vitamin content of sweet almond oil is stellar, too.

Thanks for the video! Great job as always 🙂

A gentle skin cleanser that I've been loving for the past month is the First Aid Beauty Gentle Skin Cleanser. It's really gentle and makes my skin feel baby soft after I use it. Have you ever tried it??

  31. April 9, 2013 / 2:25 am

    Hi Katie,
I have had bad acne since I was 13, ranging from (GP's diagnosis) 'acute' to 'moderate' to 'severe'. I'm 38 now & what has helped: no dairy, no wheat; tetralsyal (give it 3 months but OMG the dramatic improvement!); Vitamin D; Retin-A or Acnemycin (prescription only), Quinoderm (benzoyl peroxide); gentle yet thorough cleansing (try Emma Hardie or Eve Lom or Liz Earle) and realising that YOU will always think your skin looks worse than it actually does. Bizarrely I am a terrible sleeper too… I wonder if acne & insomnia are related?

    BTW your blog rocks.

  32. April 20, 2013 / 2:32 pm

Oh god, Katie I love you even more now (if possible) after seeing this post and realising you also like The Unbearable Lightness of Being! I read it while on holiday in Greece in the summer, sat on the balcony late at night and this book (some philosophical parts) almost made me cry. I have had, and always will have, a special place for Czech Republic in my heart since then. xx
