Hair HELP!

I have a major dilemma that I need your help with.  I have been platinum, bleach blonde for seven years now and I feel like its time for a change!  I’m about to graduate from university, I’m going to be looking for a job and I feel like I would get taken more seriously and feel more confident if I change my hair colour to a more natural blonde.

I’m thinking surfer chick, beach blonde like Shakira, Olsen Twins, Ivy from 90210, Catherine from The Pierces.

blonde

What do you think?  The thing is, I can’t keep bleaching my hair forever, I just can’t, I’ll have to go natural one day so why not now?

PROS

  • Get treated more seriously
  • Hair will be in better condition
  • I’ll be able to define my eyebrows more!

CONS

  • Expensive to do roots at a salon every month (I don’t have the money)
  • I won’t look like ‘me’ anymore
  • Hair won’t stand out as much

I’m thinking that in early August after my 23rd birthday I’m going to go to a salon and get my hair dyed a natural blonde, so then I can either grow it out completely after that or so I just get natural highlights on my roots every few months.  I’m also going to get an inch or two cut off because its tooooo long.
You can see my hair timeline in this post here and below is a picture of my hair as it is now.  As you can see its almost touching my bottom.  I love the length but its getting unmanageable.

I need your opinions, please be honest and let me know if there are any salons you recommend for a ‘natural’ look.

What do you think?  Help me!

my gosh I am so jealous of your hair length! WOW! and I think you would suit a dark blonde it would complement your eyes so much! xx

I say goodluck whatever you decide! You'll look lovely with a natural blonde shade x

This is exactly the hair I'm lusting after at the moment… I love the blonde with roots look, if it's meant to be like that, it looks kinda good, don't you think?! xx

I like the middle bottom photo of Shakira's hairdo with the very dark roots, I think it would suit you nicely! I'll be graduating from school, too, and I need a change! Thinking of going ombre as it's not yet overly "done" in my country 😉

    xx

I have my hair highlighted to probably a teeny bit darker blonde than the majority of those in the pics. Like you I am unable to afford salon prices, it used to cost just over £100 for a full head! That makes me weep now! I now have someone come over to my house to do it which is £40 and she does a really good job. It's not quite the salon experience but for the price it's a total winner! Might be worth a try? Let me know what you decide xx

Something like Ivy from 90210's hair would look lovely on you! I love the length of your hair, been growing mine out for ages to get it long like that! 🙂 x

Your hair is gorgeous but if you wanted to change it I'd look at Blake Lively's hair when she was a light blonde. I wouldn't go too dark though. Uber-blonde suits you.

I absolutely love your hair colour, it's my dream colour if I had the patience and the extra pair of hands to do the roots every month, though I definitely understand what you mean about being taken seriously etc. My natural hair colour is about the same as yours, a very dark mousy blonde that used to be white blonde when I was younger. I find that I can get a really nice, natural, baby blonde just by using box dye and no bleach, it still has that cool toned white sheen but without the bleach damage and there are highlights and streaks of colour that come through that make it look more natural and beachy than bleached blonde. I do this at home just using l'oreal recital preference in ultra lightening lightest ash blonde. I'm sure it'd work for your natural roots coming through and save you all expensive hair-dresser money and give you that nice beachy blonde on the cheap but the only thing is I don't know how the dye would work with your bleached ends. Maybe if you got it done professionally initially and from then you could deal with it yourself? Sorry for the massive essay of a comment, but I've been following your blog for ages and love all the personal tips and advice you dole out through it, hope I helped a little! xo

I think you'd look gorgeous no matter what. I had the platinum dilemma too, and I went back natural blonde. I'm now half way through growing out my own dark blonde hair colour!

Only thing to bear in mind is going from platinum to darker is difficult, so they might have to do it a bit more goldeny or reddish than you might like, but it's only temporary usually. Good luck! 🙂

I read an article on the most sought after celebrity hair colors and Jennifer Aniston's blond hair won the blond division. The article said that with her mix of high and low lights the color looks super natural.

Wow, your hair is so long! I love changing my hair often, but after having it one way for so long, it could take a while for you to get used to!

I think it's a great idea though, and much better for your hair. Good luck 🙂

I think a beachy blonde like those pictures would look great and really natural too, but I get what you mean about not looking like you. I don't think you need to worry though cos you'll soon get used to a change and I bet it'd look lovely! xo

Definetly should do it, would look amazing. Dont cut your hair its soo long, v jealous! x

Your hair looks lovely as it is now but I think it would look just as nice natural and I bet you will still feel 'you' but just a slightly different version.
I love Ivy's hair, I say go for it!

I think light blonde or even medium would look good. Up to u At the end 🙂 it's just when u aspire to work for big corporation they do look at everything. I don't see a bleach blonde at my work and I work for a multiple million dollars co I know it's messed up but HR are strict with appearance 🙁 anyhoo good luck 🙂

Wear a suit, they'll take you seriously.

Or, my preference, work somewhere where they don't judge you by your hair or other aesthetic preferences (As long as they aren't inappropriate).

Only change your hair if *you* want to.

  17. July 21, 2011 / 10:01 am

I do love your hair now but beachy not bleachy blonde sounds like a much better option.
Not sure how much better for your hair it would be, might not be bleach but you are still dying it regularly!
I think change is always good though, so I would go for it!

I think you suit the colour you are now but I think the 'surfer girl' blonde that you are thinking of will suit you well too. I'm not really sure how they go about changing your hair to that colour when it has been bleached? i think it might take a while?
If you can get your hair coloured with highlights, rather than all over dye, then you usually don't have to go to the salon so much as the roots grow a bit more naturally because it's not a block colour). I usually go 2-3 months in between each time (I do a full head of highlights at the salon). I do need mine ding now but I usually think in the summer you can get away with having roots with this kind of blonde. x

I know this wasn't an option but I think you'd look great as a red head! Like Christina Hendricks from Mad Men x

I love your hair as it is – maybe just shorter. If you can't have platinum hair now, when can you?? We have very serious, intelligent people where I work (big gallery) with cute hair, stylish people…you just need to stay in an enviromnent that appreciates and doesn't judge based on an interesting taste.

  21. July 21, 2011 / 6:34 pm

I think, as much as your current colour suits you, the more natural blonde would suit you a lot, and because you have such long hair, you could really do the whole messy/wavy beachy look – even if you cut some off. When I stopped bleaching my hair (a couple of years ago), the condition of it got so much better, more than I thought it would, and yes, I reckon you're more likely to be taken seriously in job interviews etc etc xx

I think your look is fabulous as is, to be completely honest. I understand wanting to switch things up. I just wanted to say that while I think a beachier, darker blonde will look amazing on you, I don't recommend doing it to look more professional or be taken more seriously. I have worked in/managed offices as an unnatural blonde, and been taken just as seriously as I was as a brunette and have been as a (very) unnatural black haired woman.

Everything depends on your internal attitude. If you have a look and attitude that says you care about your overall work and are capable, no one will care what you look like. Walk in confident in both yourself and the work you will do.

And fwiw, I freaking adore Shakira's hair in her She Wolf video. Awesomeness for eternity.

I love how your hair looks! I usually prefer dark hair but blonde hair really suits you! I think I understand your problem; I've had bleached hair from time to time and since my natural hair colour is medium/dark blonde, my roots always look super dark with bleached hair and it makes me feel cheap or something (as in not taken seriously). I have dark brown hair at the moment but I'm thinking about doing blonde highlights all over until my hair is a lot lighter. The look I'm going for is golden medium/dark blonde with highlights and I think something like that would totally suit you too (I do have warm colouring though). When the base colour is close to your natural colour you won't have to go to the saloon as often. Hope you'll find a solution that you like! 🙂

  24. July 24, 2011 / 11:21 pm

    So…have you done it yet?

Don't change your hair colour to be taken more seriously.

  25. July 25, 2011 / 8:39 am

I think that hair color like shakira's would look great on you:)

  26. July 25, 2011 / 2:09 pm

I love the platinum & I think if you're looking for a career in the creative industry, it's fine to stand out a little. If anything, I'd be inclined to go for a chop as (although it doesn't look like it from the photos) I'd be concerned about the condition following so many chemical treatments.

Go Natural! Your natural color was designed to be the best color for your skin tone and eyes… Dye your hair your natural color so that when it grows out your dye and roots will match!

Your hair length is awesome!! I think the Shakira beach blonde type would fit your style really well. It can also be made to look professional, stylish, and hott!

  30. August 16, 2011 / 8:48 pm

Your hair is just gorgeous – personally I just couldn't alter it if it were mine lol! I'm sure you'll be taken seriously whatever.

  31. August 18, 2011 / 6:22 pm

I've had my hair bleached for a while and I must say I loved it !
And it suits you totally =)
I don't think you're gonna be taken any more seriously with natural blond hair … You're not gonna look as "special" (in a good way!) as you do now I think !
Natural blond hair is quiet common.
But I'm sure it'd look good anyway =) If you wanna give it a go, don't hesitate !
You only live once 😉 hehe.
